The narrow 60 000 hectare belt along the West Coast of South Africa is the only place in the world where Rooibos tea can be grown. This area is also one of the world’s six Plant Kingdoms. The typical Mediterranean climate, ideal temperatures, rainfall and sunshine, offers the natural terroir needed for Rooibos to be cultivated in harmony with nature. The sandy slopes and undulating valleys of the rugged Cedarberg Mountain Range provide the perfect habitat for Rooibos (meaning ‘redbush’) – come to be called one of the Rooibos Regions of South Africa.

Rooibos not only tastes great – it has many health benefits such as being naturally caffeine free (unlike black & green teas) and containing natural anti-oxidants. Piekenierskloof Wine Company’s connection to rooibos is strong, as on one of our key farms – Bergendal – we grow both grapes and rooibos. While the grapes go to our winemaking team, the rooibos gets taken to our friends at Carmién Tea. Carmién Tea has established itself as producer and supplier of quality packaged retail Rooibos tea products in South Africa, with The Carmién Rooibos range available in organic (bio) and/or regular (conventional) products and is produced on Fairtrade principles.

Recently, Piekenierskloof and Carmién have actually worked together on something a little different to bring you South Africa’s first tea and wine pairing! While it may seem strange at first, a tea tasting is very much like a wine tasting. The aroma comes first. You suck in as much oxygen with each sip as possible and roll the tea around your mouth. And unless you want to be awake for a week, you must spit! There are as many different teas in the world as there are wines – maybe more. The tastes are just as fabulously complex and diverse. It is a very exciting pairing, and we have no doubt you will enjoy it.
